Most organisations still rely on VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) to give mobile workers access to a single business‑critical application. It works, but it is significantly over‑engineered for the job. It is the digital equivalent of buying an entire car just to listen to the radio.

Traditional VDI platforms such as Citrix were designed for office environments with stable fibre connections. They attempt to stream a full “Gold Image” of the Windows desktop at all times. That desktop is roughly one million pixels, refreshed continuously, even when the user only interacts with a small part of the screen.

In the public sector, a cyberattack is never just a technical incident. It is a service failure that affects citizens, frontline teams and essential operations. When a local authority loses access to its systems, refuse collections stop, social care visits are delayed, and housing repairs cannot be scheduled. The impact is immediate and visible. This is why cyber‑resilience has become a core requirement for every modern remote access strategy.

VDI changed the way organisations worked. It centralised access, improved security and made remote work possible long before hybrid work became the norm. But as mobility, field operations and device diversity have accelerated, the limitations of VDI have become harder to ignore. Modern teams no longer need a full desktop streamed to every device; they need fast, secure access to the applications that matter.
