Discover how the 2GoCloud software solution streamlined operations and

modernised infrastructure at Scottish Water.

Background

Scottish Water, a statutory corporation accountable to the public through the Scottish Government, provides water and sewerage services across over 30,900 square miles in Scotland, serving approximately 5.7 million people in 2.64 million households as well as 225,000 businesses across Scotland. Employing over 4,600 individuals, including a large number of field engineers, the company ensures the smooth operation of extensive water treatment and sewer systems.

They faced challenges with an outdated IoT application dependent upon out of support hardware in use by their field force of engineers monitoring the state of equipment in a variety of sites.

While a modernised version was planned, the current implementation posed significant security and operational risks. Legacy ruggedised laptops running unsupported Windows versions heightened these concerns. These devices relied on outdated browsers and components, creating vulnerabilities and hindering modernisation efforts, including the shift to tablets and the reduction of the organisation’s carbon footprint.

In collaboration with IT partner Atos, Scottish Water selected 2GoCloud to address these challenges. Early trials showed the IoT application could operate effectively on modern tablets using the 2GoCloud solution. A Proof of Concept (POC) was initiated with a small group of employees. However, a cyber incident expedited the need for deployment. Within a week, 2GoCloud delivered a SaaS solution, enabling 100 engineers to use tablets and smartphones with minimal support.

Today, the system supports a growing number of field staff, enhancing efficiency and security.

Key Drivers for Change

1. Eliminate Security Vulnerabilities: Transition to a cloud-based solution to mitigate risks

associated with outdated systems.

2. Support Carbon Neutrality Goals: Move from data centres to cloud infrastructure to reduce the carbon footprint.

3. Extend Legacy Application Usability: Provide an interim solution while enabling long-term

redevelopment.

4. Boost Productivity: Empower engineers to access real-time data from anywhere, reducing delays.

5. Enhance Self-Reliance: Minimise reliance on control centres by providing direct access to status information.

6. Improve Employee Wellbeing: Enable flexible, location-independent work, fostering job

satisfaction.

7. Reduce Costs: Lower IT costs, training, and infrastructure expenses such as power and travel through simplified operations.

Outcomes and Benefits

Enhanced Security and Compliance

• Advanced Security Protocols: Encryption and regular updates coupled with no data being stored on the tablets reduce breach risks.

• Regulatory Compliance: Meets legal and industry standards for data protection.

Improved Accessibility and Productivity

• Real-Time Access: Enables field engineers to retrieve critical information instantly, wherever and whenever they need.

• User-Friendly Interface: Simplifies operations and minimises training needs.

Increased Operational Efficiency

• Faster application performance: Reduces downtime and improves throughput.

• Elimination of Legacy Dependencies: Ensures better integration and functionality

Cost Efficiency

• Reduced Licensing Fees: Saves approximately 75% of current expenditure (roughly £150,000) annually.

• Lower IT Support Costs: Estimated savings of £5,000 annually.

• Minimised Travel Costs: Remote access reduces field travel expenses.

Sustainability and Carbon Neutrality

• Lower Energy Consumption: Cloud infrastructure significantly reduces energy usage.

• Reduced Hardware Dependency: Decreases need for physical servers and legacy systems.

• Remote Work Enablement: Cuts commuting emissions, supporting carbon reduction targets.

Future-Proof Technology
• Scalability: Adapts to changing needs without significant investments.

• Innovation Readiness: Supports rapid adoption and integration of new technologies.

Employee Wellbeing

• Enhanced Job Satisfaction: Eliminates outdated processes and boosts efficiency.

• Improved Work-Life Balance: Flexible working options promote overall wellbeing.

User comments

We wanted to move away from the reliance upon old, inefficient, and expensive technology and allow our customer-facing colleagues to access live asset data on mobile devices.

However, using legacy applications on modern mobile devices is a challenge – so we turned to one of our digital partners, Atos, for their expertise.

They introduced us to one of their specialist partners, iNovar, who were quickly able to show us how their 2GoCloud.com solution could provide the answer.

This has rapidly progressed through a proof of concept and is now providing a secure, reliable, and familiar solution for our field colleagues.
